About

This task checks how well you listen and write. You’ll hear a sentence once. Then, you need to type exactly what you heard. Sentences are usually 10 to 11 words long. You’ll hear either three or four sentences.

Exam Tips

  • Listen carefully to understand WFD sentences. Don’t just memorize each word. Memory without understanding isn’t reliable.
  • You can’t always trust what you hear because different things like plosion loss, consonant-vowel linking, double sounds, and other factors can affect it. Use your knowledge of grammar to figure out the right words.
  • If you are unsure about some of the words in your answer, you may substitute possible words that will not affect your listening or writing scores, but please do not substitute more than three words.

Time Span

This is the last part of the test. Keep an eye on the time. Make sure you have enough time for each question. Write From Dictation is really important for listening and writing. Try to save at least 5-6 minutes for it.

Practice Goal

  • WHV: Spell at least four words correctly in each sentence.
  • 50 points: Spell 50% or more of the words correctly in each sentence.
  • 65 points: Spell 70% or more of the words correctly (limit your errors to 3 – 4 words) in each sentence.
  • 79 points: Spell 80% or more of the words correctly (limit your errors to 1 – 2 words) in each sentence.
