Overview of the Type of Question

This question type usually comes first in the Reading Section. You’ll see 4 or 5 short passages, each about 80 words long, with 3 to 5 blanks. Below, there are 6 to 8 choices listed. You need to use grammar clues to pick the right words and then drag them into the correct blanks.

Tips

This question type gives you a lot of points in the Reading Section. To make your answers better, try to:

  1. Understand how to use different grammar rules.
  2. Build up your vocabulary. (For 65 points: CET-4 or higher; for 79 points: CET-6 or higher).
  3. Improve your understanding of what you read.

The difficulty of this question type changes in real tests, so it’s important for test takers to manage their time wisely. Don’t spend too long on a hard question, or you might not have enough time for easier ones that come later.

Objectives of Practice

  • WHV: Try to get about 2 out of 5 answers correct. If you have a small vocabulary (less than 4,000 words), memorize new words. We recommend memorizing all the words from PTE Basic Vocab, especially if you’re aiming for scores between 30 and 65.
  • 50 points: Try to get at least half of the answers correct for each task. Never make more than 2 mistakes, and aim for no more than 1 mistake per task.
  • 65 points: Try to have no more than 1.5 mistakes for each task (aim to have an average of 1.5 errors for every 5 blanks). For 79 points, aim to have no more than 1 mistake for each task.

Practice Task

Practice 15 FIB(R) & FIB(R&W) tasks with focused reading. Make sure you understand the paragraphs and why each word is chosen for the blanks. If you don’t understand the passage, your correctness rate will likely be lower than expected. Make sure to meet the requirements for the grade level you’re aiming for.

Before you do a mock or real test, try doing a whole set of questions to get used to them. You can use the OnePTE app on Android, or iOS, or website for practice. Also, remember to manage your time well.
